Sacred Oil Alchemy

The Scent Maker's Journey

with Trista Haggerty
August 2-4, 2024

The women of the Myrrhophore tradition were also known as the Scent Priestesses.  They were women who worked with nature's aroma, experienced as the manifestation of the Divine.  They understood the power of scent through working with precious oils as they served as midwives to the soul, both leaving this world and entering.  They were the gatekeepers of life's most awesome and sacred threshold moments.

This summer's Sacred Oil Alchemy class will guide you through the process of making the scents of ancient Egypt. Trista has spent time learning from an Egyptologist who specializes in decyphering the hieroglyphs engraved into the walls of the "perfumery" rooms found in the temples.

Ancient scent recipes were used in ancient Egypt for a variety of purposes - to "wake-up the gods", to assist someone with their death process, for cleansing the temples, and for enhancing their spiritual awareness.

During this class, Trista will guide you through the steps for recreating the sacred scents, and their uses as they have been deciphered from the walls of the temples.  Here is what you'll learn to make:

  • Kyphi - an Egyptian Incense used in the temples.

  • Hathor's Perfume - a sacred balm used to "wake-up" the spirit of Hathor in the temples.

  • Blue Lotus Sacred Perfume - Known as the Lily Nile, the blue lotus flower was sacred to the Egyptians.  They referred to it as "lotus to the nose".

  • Herbal Infused Wine - learn the connection of wine making to scent making.

Trista will also share about life in Egypt and the many uses of sacred oils in the day to day life of the ancient Egyptians.

As Trista guides you through the process of  making the scents of Egypt, she will discuss with the group ways to bring the uses of the scents into our modern-day, as well as use plants found in our own region that may produce the same effects.

Where will I sleep?

We have several cabins in close proximity to Eagle House where we'll be meeting each day.  The cabins are charming and newly renovated. Our bathrooms and showers are in Eagle House, just a few steps away.

Down a wooded trail, is a fountain of fresh spring water that comes from the many springs on our hill.  This is sacred water.  It's vibrancy and freshness is palpable and you can fill your pitcher throughout the day.

You will either have a cabin to yourself, or share with one other person, depending on how many sign-up for this course.
