Hawk Circle is a great place to gain experience under guidance and learn lots of different approaches to teaching and leading wilderness skills programs. Our work is very hands-on and transformational in nature, with an emphasis on healing, inner and personal growth and lots of fun and community involvement. In most cases, we offer housing, some good food benefits as well as a chance to live in a beautiful mountain environment and practice the ways of living close to nature. Staff here also have opportunities to grow professionally, gaining skills of construction, arts, photography, organic gardening, volunteering at area museums and environmental programs as well as leading programs or camps when ready.

Youth Mentoring Internship

Position Dates:  March 17-June 14, 2008

Description: This Spring come and join the Hawk Circle community to learn and teach primitive wilderness skills, nature awareness, and native crafts and games in a supportive environment, under the wings of skilled instructors. This Internship is recommended both for active outdoor educators who want to add dimension to their skill, and also for those who simply love nature and children!

Duties: Interns assist in the planning, preparation and delivery of three types of programs: 1) local after-school programs, 2) school class trips to our land, and 3) smaller events such as local festivals, mini-courses, and the farmers market. Interns will learn, practice and help teach most, if not all, of the following: Fire without matches, survival shelter, outdoor cooking, tracking, awareness, basketry, crafts from bone, stone, bark, leather and wood, movement, safety, hunting, survival philosophy, tomahawk throwing, plant and tree ID and uses, animal ecology, storytelling, caretaking & more.

Qualifications: Candidates must be enthusiastic learners with a love of nature and children, and use spare time having fun learning and practicing wilderness skills! Candidates must be safety-minded and have professional attire, appearance and attitude. Good communication skills and the ability to work closely in a team setting is vital. You must be in good physical condition, be able to pass a background check, and have a good sense of humor. Preferred applicants will have primitive wilderness survival skills and teaching experience, although these are not as important as the desire to learn and teach. Also preferred are first aid certification, experience with group living situations, a good driving record, and the ability to drive your personal vehicle to area schools (mileage reimbursed at 40¢ per mile).

Benefits: Housing in a shared room is provided, as is food when school class trips are in session. Extensive training is provided, and on time off, Interns participate in our Earth Skills Semester course, which includes a week-long tracking expedition. Possibility for summer employment. Transportation, phone calls, and food outside of school class trips are not included in the benefits of the Internship.

Office Admin/Development Intern
Position Dates
: Spring and Summer seasons. Apply Immediately.

Description:   A part-time position for a person who is well organized and has office skills, and wants to learn how to support a busy wilderness organization from behind the scenes.     The position combines a little of everything, but it's focus is on getting key data into files that allow it to have an immediate impact on our ability to reach out to our students and community, as well as fulfill our mission.    We also will spend time developing fundraising, marketing and other community related projects that are fun and rewarding.

Duties:   Phone duties, paper and e-filing, newsletter mailings, program registration, and some computer work according to ability.   Video, writing, creative development may also be included.   The position is approximately 25 hours a week, giving lots of time to take part in various skills, walks, community projects and events as well as any youth programs.

Qualifications:    A positive attitude and strong work ethic is a must, as is a proffessional demeanor.    Computer skills that are Mac based greatly desired, but will train if needed.   Ability to work unsupervised at times, and good organization skills also vital to the succss of this position.

Community House Manager and

             Child Care Provider

Position Dates: Open until filled 

This great position has two part-time aspects, and each is described in full detail below.

Community House Manager


Description:  The Farmhouse here at Hawk Circle serves many purposes. Not only is our office in part of the house, but it is our central facility where students and some staff live throughout the year, and while summer camps are happening and school groups are here, it also serves as our main dining facility where all meals are made and served. Needless to say it is a busy place with lots of people coming and going. Having a person managing the busy flow of students and staff is helpful to keep the house clean and running smoothly.

Duties:   The duties and responsibilities of the house manager are to organize and lead weekly house meetings where any concerns or conflicts can be addressed and to establish the weekly house cleaning schedule, make sure that farmhouse residents are doing what is asked of them, completing their assigned chores, and to maintain the house at a certain level of cleanliness. Making sure that rooms and workshop spaces are ready for incoming students and programs is also a part of this job. It is a very part-time position and can be accomplished in just a few hours per week. This position is being offered in combination with the child-care position (please see separate description below).

Qualifications:   A positive, friendly, community oriented person with good organizational skills and the ability to manage and hold a position of authority with a small group of people.

Benefits/Compensation:     We provide full-time housing, food during youth programs, and the option of participating as a student in your free time in our Earth Skills Semester Program and other adult programs where a variety of wilderness skills can be learned and mastered. It also is a great opportunity to be a part of the Hawk Circle community. The weekly schedule with the childcare position is flexible.

Child Care Provider

Description:  Ricardo and Trista’s son, Javier, is ten years old. He is homeschooled, and likes to be part of the community when he can.  He is extremely social and loves to play games and act out stories with his stuffed animals.  Javi gets around by use of his wheelchair and also by crawling.  He is still small for his age, so he can still be carried around much of the time.  We also use a stroller and backpack for hiking.    Currently, he loves playing cards, and baking as well as getting ready for our community events that bring people together.

We are looking for a caring, creative, enthusiastic and responsible individual who is energetic, loving and playful who would like to be part of the Hawk Circle community while doing part time childcare.  This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who has the gift for working with young children and would like to learn wilderness skills and/or be a part of our healing and transformative mentoring and community environment.

Duties: Playing games, storytelling, arts and crafts, hiking and outdoor play, some meal preparations.  Trips to the library, bakery, or educational areas may also be planned each week.    We are also planning to start a homeschooling group that would also be part of the position.   There will be frequent lifting and/or carrying and requires a certain amount of strength.

Qualifications:  A desire to work with young children and experience in childcare a must.  Experience or education working with children with special needs a real plus, but not necessary.     A desire to learn about unique approaches to education, learning styles, alternative/wholistic living and healing also very helpful and important. Beneficial certifications include CPR, First Aid, etc.

Seasonal Summer Camp Job Descriptions

Summer camp positions are a great way to get a feel for our programs, approach and be part of an amazing summer community.   Many staff return year after year, to contribute to the learning of campers and staff alike, but we are always looking for new people who want to help out, learn and grow here in Cherry Valley.    We welcome your inquiries and applications, so please apply early if you would like to be considered here at Hawk Circle.


Summer Wilderness Instructor
Position Dates: June 18 - August 18
Please note: Position is Seasonal!

Our wilderness instructors provide not only thorough understanding of many wilderness skills but also the transformative elements of community and personal growth in our summer camp programs. This person guides both the skills and deeper teachings of our camp into a powerful experience for students, through celebrations, challenges, councils and excellent awareness and communication skills.

Duties: Supervise and lead various wilderness camp activities including campfire games, awareness and survival games, teach shelter, fire making, many crafts and stories. Supervision of other staff, some training and also logistical support may be included in this position. Camp chores, construction and airport pickups are sometimes needed.

Experience Requirements: Previous youth program teaching experience, excellent communication and safety awareness, extensive wilderness skills training and practice, understanding of mentoring concepts and a willingness to be part of a team are needed. Leadership and a great sense of humor a plus.

Beneficial Certifications: Wilderness First Responder, EMT, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard, Basic First Aid, Commercial Driverís License.

Compensation: $200-300 per week, depending on experience. Tent accommodations as well as all food during the camp programs is included. Staff also receive training in wilderness skills taught by other staff during the program.

Summer Camp Counselor
Position Dates:
June 18 - August 18
Please note: Position is Seasonal!

Our summer camp counselors support the instructors and help hold basic camp responsibilities such as the daily chores, camp wake-up and bed-time duties, as well as substantial teaching roles.

Duties: Supervision of campers during meals, chores, siesta, wake-up and bedtime, as well as during skills and activities class times. Some meal preparation and clean-up may be required.

Experience Requirements: Previous youth supervision, safety awareness, some wilderness skills and craft knowledge helpful.

Beneficial Certifications: Wilderness First Responder, EMT, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard, Basic First Aid, Commercial Driverís License.

Compensation: $100-200 per week, depending on experience. Tent accommodations as well as all food during the camp programs is included. Staff also receive training in wilderness skills taught by other staff during the program.

Summer Kitchen Manager
Position Dates:
  mid-June-late August

The Hawk Circle Kitchen is a vital part of our camp program. We take great pride in providing our campers and staff with delicious, healthy and kid friendly meals. By maintaining a clean, friendly and nurturing environment for both the staff and campers, there develops a sense that they are supported and fed on many levels.

Duties: Weekly menu planning (approved by director). Food supplies inventory, ordering and shopping. Supervising and training kitchen assistants and caretakers. Maintaining cleanliness of dining, kitchen, porch and bathroom areas to the levels specified by the New York State Dept. of Health. Insure that all meal preparations, cooking and clean-up take place. Communicate/plan with camp counselors for campfire meals.

The Kitchen Manager has a part time Assistant for the duration of the summer, as well as teen Caretakers for most camps. These helpers do cleaning, dishes, help prepare lunches and do other meal prep under the supervision of the Manager. At times, other camp staff members can help cook or do other kitchen help as needed to accommodate days off and provide support.

Experience Requirements: This job requires the individual to cook for groups of approximately 30-35 people, have good organizational skills, supervisory skills, cleanliness and a warm and inviting personality. The hours per week will vary depending on the efficiency and organizational skills of the applicant. Experience in cooking, excellent cleaning skills and willingness to learn preferred.

Beneficial Certifications: Basic First Aid, CPR, Food Safety and Sanitation, clean driving record.

Compensation: $275 per week for our 8 week season

We also provide housing and all meals during all camp programs.

Summer Kitchen Assistant
Position Dates:  mid-June-late August
Please note: Position is Seasonal!

The Kitchen Assistant is a great one for learning about how meals are prepared and kitchens are run. Because this position is part time, it allows for much involvement in the rest of the camp activities, games, skills or programs.

Duties: Meal preparation for main dinner meals, lunch, staff lunches, breakfast, serving meals, clean-up and helping to maintain cleanliness of the kitchen, dining and food storage areas as well as communicate with camp staff about kitchen issues.

Experience Requirements: Previous kitchen experience is helpful but not absolutely necessary. Willingness to learn, attention to detail and ability to handle responsibility are very important to the success of this position.

Beneficial Certifications: First Aid, CPR, Food Safety and Sanitation.

Compensation: $75 per week for our 8 week season

We also provide housing and all meals during all camp programs.

Summer Camp Health Director
Position Dates: mid-June-late August
Please note: Position is Seasonal!

This position is a supervisory, part time position that covers the health of our campers and our staff. We are a small camp and very family oriented, and this position supports our staff in keeping everyone healthy.

Duties: Meet with parents and staff on the first day of camp, manage our infirmary and first aid kits as well as communicate with staff about individual camper needs. Be on call when necessary to check on the health of the camp, as needed.

Experience Requirements: Previous experience with youth helpful, at least one year of nursing and health care experience in a professional setting.

Beneficial Certifications: MD, PA, RN, LPN, EMT, CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Compensation: $1,500 for the season, part time, for 7 week camp season. Certified Nurses may bring children and attend appropriate camp programs if space allows. Food, tenting and use of Hawk Circle facilities also provided.

Limited housing may be available.

Summer Caretaker Supervisor
Position Dates:  mid-June-late August

Please note: Position is Seasonal!

At our camp, older campers ready for more responsibility often enroll in the Caretaker Program. This program allows participants to work in our gardens, in the kitchen, help with the summer camps as well as learn new skills. We encourage strong leadership, excellent work ethics, safety and healthy role-modeling.

Duties: Supervise and lead various work projects, planning weekly schedules, maintain various hand and power tools, as well as teaching wilderness skills. Gardening, maintenance, field and brush work, kitchen and landscaping duties may be included.

Experience Requirements: Previous gardening, general grounds, landscaping and tool use and safety skills necessary. Excellent work habits, positive role-modeling and a willingness to work side by side with youth on various projects to enhance self-esteem and leadership for our participants.

Beneficial Certifications: Wilderness First Responder, EMT, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard, Tool Use and Safety, clean driving record.

Compensation: $100-200 week, for 7 week camp season, includes tenting and food.

Summer Garden Manager
Position Dates:   mid-June-late August

Please note: Position is seasonal.

The Hawk Circle Garden is a showcase of organic food and a healthy, caring environment. The garden is where many community members visit to help, experience a different kind of nature as well as find great tasting food. It is also where our students and staff may find experience in working with our hands,

Duties: Organic gardening chores such as planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, plant care and thinning, tool use, teaching and supervising Caretakers, staff and community members in wholistic gardening practices, managing compost and mulching, some landscaping and general maintenance of grounds included. Position may include some produce sales at the local Farmersí Market on Saturdays or other evenings.

Experience Requirements: Previous gardening and landscaping experience preferred. Good safety awareness, supervisory skills, youth working and teaching skills are very important. Willingness to learn, self teach and network with other staff and farmers.

Beneficial Certifications: Wilderness First Responder, EMT, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard, Basic First Aid.

Compensation: $50-150 per week, depending on experience. Includes housing or tenting, food throughout the summer camp program and the opportunity to learn and attend various skills classes as part of our camps.
