Hawk's Hearth
The Arts of Camp
Coed Ages 13-17
August 10-16, 2008
Cost: $675
The hearth is the center of every home, every campsite, and the source of comfort, nourishment and renewal. When our hearth is well planned and cared for, we can find the strength to have our unique adventures in the wilderness or whatever we choose to do. The hearth is a great place to hang out, too, as it is warm, cooks our food and is a very social place to connect with friends and share our skills, stories and meals.
In this camp, we will learn the secrets of selecting, building and using a good campsite. We will make our own fire-circles, using stones we have gathered, build benches for sitting comfortably, create places to make and store our food, utensils and supplies as well as make some incredible meals! We will learn to use cast iron cookware, clay baking, roasting, grinding and preparing acorns for pancakes, make at least five kinds of ashcakes, sample different nutritious and delicious teas and enjoy everything thoroughly. Campfire and cooking safety will be shared, as well as how to handle and store food safely, which are important skills for any camping or cooking endeavor. Camp furniture, quick, effective shelters and lots of fire stuff -wood gathering and building, will be taught as well. We will also go on gathering and exploring hikes, to enjoy the summer landscape and balance out our ‘camptime’.
