Newfoundland Expedition

August 2-19, 2012

Coed Ages 16 & up

Cost: $2,700

The Newfoundland Expedition is a journey that takes 7 students across the eastern edge of Canada by van, crossing from Nova Scotia onto "the Rock" as Newfoundland is often called.   A land ofancient mountain ranges, glaciers, icebergs, caribou and moose, we will travel along the coastal villages where people still fish for cod, lobster and crab, and head into the backcountry to encounter arctic hares, ptarmigans, waterfalls and fjiords.

Students will learn about the natural history of this place, as well as the cultures that have lived in Newfoundland for the past six hundred years, and discover the Norse settlement that was the first meeting between human origins from East to West, for the Europeans and the Native Americans.   We will explore L'anse aux Meadows, and the northern barrens of rock, brush, fen and marsh, and taste the sweet berries that grow only in the far north, like cloudberries, partridge berries, squash berries and crowberries.   We'll encounter moose and other wildlife, learn how to make lobster traps from nature the way fishermen have been doing for centuries, cook delicious meals over the fire and camp along the lakes, rivers and ponds.

It is an adventure that will change you, in ways that go beyond words, and in the fellowship of good company, we will find elements of our most primal self.   Returning, our experience of the world is expanded, as we have lived a glimpse into a way of life that is truly close to the earth and to the sea.
