What could be more inspiring or more relaxing than to spend a weekend in a beautiful wild setting while knitting with friends? Our knitting Retreat at Hawk Circle will provide you with the nourishment you are looking for with beautiful views, healthy foods, and fun, creative projects.
If you’ve never been to Hawk Circle, you are in for a treat. Hawk Circle is located on 200 acres of woods, streams and fields, nestled in a valley between the foothills of the Catskill Mountains and the Adirondack Mountains where primitive skills and ancient wisdom is shared. Whether you are here for a retreat or a weekend class, you will undoubtedly experience a deep connectedness with the environment offering you inspiration, renewal and inner peace.
This retreat is for the beginner knitter or for the more experienced who wants to perhaps learn something new and to enjoy the company of other passionate knitters. We will be collecting a variety of plants and nuts that are abundant through out our landscape this fall for using to dye our wool, knit simple bags which we will later felt, learn a basic cable stitch design, and learn to hand spin, using a drop spindle. Materials are provided, however, please bring your own needles and any project you may already be working on.
We will be having instruction time during mornings and afternoons, with plenty of time in between to relax or wander our beautiful landscape. Evenings will be a time to cozy up to the wood stove, sip our herbal teas while we knit and share stories and good company.
Heather Burrill, and
What You Will Learn:
The Art of Dyeing Wool:
Autumn is a wonderful time for collecting plants for dyeing wool and yarn for your winter knitting projects. We will wander the landscape and collect plants and berries that we will use in our dye baths.
The Art of Spinning:
Using wool roving, we will learn to card wool and prepare it for spinning using a drop spindle.
The Art of knitting and Felting:
Using your hand dyed yarn, you will learn the basic knit and pearl stitch to make beautiful bags and pouches, which we will later felt. A basic cable stitch will also be taught.
